ACCEPTANCE AND COMMITMENT THERAPY (ACT)

ACT is a type of psychotherapy that focuses on giving you the tools to manage distressing thoughts or feelings and live in a way that matches your identified goals and values. You take an active role in your treatment by committing to the actions that will lead to a more satisfied and fulfilling life while dropping or changing the behaviors that are unhelpful and keeping you stuck in destructive attitudes and habits. Act was developed in the early 1980’s and is an empirically based approach proven effective in dealing with a myriad of issues such as stress, anxiety, depression, as well as behaviors that are impulsive, reactive, obsessive, or compulsory. ACT can help you to lead a more connected and intentional life.

EYE MOVEMENT DESENSITIZATION AND REPROCESSING (EMDR)

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy was developed in the 1980’s by Dr. Francine Shapiro and is an extensively researched, effective psychotherapy method proven to help people recover from trauma and other distressing life experiences, including PTSD, anxiety, depression, and panic disorders. EMDR differs from other traditional talk therapy and seeks to utilize your brain’s natural healing and processing pathways in targeting specific memories or behaviors. EMDR is usually shorter than many other psychotherapy models. For more information, please visit the EMDRIA website https://www.emdria.org/about-emdr-therapy/

COGNITIVE BEHAVIORAL THERAPY (CBT)

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a form of psychological treatment that has been demonstrated to be effective for a range of problems including depression, anxiety disorders, alcohol and drug use problems, marital problems, eating disorders, and severe mental illness. Numerous research studies suggest that CBT leads to significant improvement in functioning and quality of life. CBT is based on several core principles such as: Psychological problems are based, in part, on faulty or unhelpful ways of thinking, or on learned patterns of unhelpful behavior; people suffering from psychological problems can learn better ways of coping with them, thereby relieving their symptoms and becoming more effective in their lives. Through exercises in the session as well as “homework” exercises outside of sessions, clients are helped to develop coping skills, whereby they can learn to change their own thinking, problematic emotions, and behavior. CBT therapists emphasize what is going on in the person’s current life, rather than what has led up to their difficulties. A certain amount of information about one’s history is needed, but the focus is primarily on moving forward in time to develop more effective ways of coping with life.

DIALECTICAL BEHAVIORAL THERAPY (DBT)

Its main goals are to teach people how to live in the moment, develop healthy ways to cope with stress, regulate their emotions, and improve their relationships with others. DBT was originally intended to treat borderline personality disorder (BPD), but it has been adapted to treat other mental health conditions. It can help people who have difficulty with emotional regulation or are exhibiting self-destructive behaviors (such as eating disorders and substance use disorders) in addition to PTSD. DBT is an evidence based therapy approach that can be utilized in a variety of individual or group settings. DBT skills focus on strengthening Mindfulness, Distress Tolerance, Interpersonal Effectiveness, and Emotional Regulation.

SOLUTION FOCUSED THERAPY (SFT/SFBT)

SFT was developed in the late 1970’s by Steve deShazer and Insoo Kim Berg; it is future-focused, goal-directed, and focuses on solutions, rather than on the problems that brought you to seek therapy. SFT seeks to enact change by constructing solutions rather than focusing on problems. It has been called a hope friendly, positive emotion eliciting, future-oriented vehicle for formulating, motivating, achieving, and sustaining desired behavioral change. It is more focused on the present and future but delves into the past to look for exceptions and ways to build on previous solutions.

ACCELERATED RESOLUTION THERAPY (ART)

Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) is a form of psychotherapy with roots in existing evidence-based therapies but shown to achieve benefits much more rapidly than traditional talk therapy. The goal is to rapidly move clients beyond the place where they are stuck in difficult or traumatic experiences toward growth and positive changes. The process is very straightforward, using relaxing eye movements and a technique called Voluntary Memory/Image Replacement to change the way in which the negative images are stored in the brain. ART has been recognized as an effective psychotherapy for PTSD, depression, stress, and personal resilience. ART has also been classified as a promising therapy for symptoms of phobia, panic, anxiety, sleep and wake disorders, disruptive and antisocial behaviors, general functioning and well-being.
